It is dark, and very very cold. The setting is what looks like a car park, with bays about 3 x 3 meters forming a grid. The time is 5am and a few people are busy setting up their stalls for another days work. For this is a typical street market setting.
Many are husband and wife teams that travel many kilometres to earn a living at various sites in Australia. This is about two markets Penrith and Fairfield NSW. Penrith Markets in the Showground Penrith and Fairfield Markets also in a Showground at Fairfield. The same experience occurs at markets around Australia every week.
Sam & Ann the watch repairer and seller, John & Margaret from 'Names in Frames', Terry & Marlene from 'Just Moments in Time' or Barbara, Miriam and John from the Seafood bar with many others survive from the living made from visitors to the Markets.
Some folk setting up between 5 & 6am may have travelled from far off places like Lithgow, Wollongong or Newcastle to trade for 6 – 8 hours before packing it all into cars, vans or trailers leaving an empty, what looks like, car park.
For about 30 years these two Markets are a regular meeting place for visitors and Stallholders. Come and meet the people behind the folding tables and under the umbrellas and gazebos exposed to wind, rain, heat and freezing cold. They have a story to tell, products and services to sell and value your support.
